Johns Hopkins Researchers Develop “Lab on a chip” To Aid Study Of Neurons

By admin | February 26, 2008

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering and the NanoBio Technology Institute have developed a micro laboratory that allows researchers to individually control the chemical composition surrounding single neurons.

The direction of neuron growth is controlled by a complex interplay of the milieu surrounding the cell body. Research in this area has been hampered because it has been difficult to control the flow of chemical constituents in such a way that would allow researchers to test and measure different interventions. Using a micro-sized chip with wells and baffles, researchers can now direct the movement of materials.
